Special Olympics - 25th July - 31st July 2009 - Leicester
Sean Sarson was selected to fight as part of the East Midlands Judo Team at the Special Olympics in Leicester. As one of the East Midlands coaches I was very proud of Sean and his achievement in winning a Gold medal in his event. Sean also took part in the team event later in the week with Kellie Brabham (Southfields Judo Club) and Barry Miller (Grimsby Judo Club) and the three of them went on to win first place in their event to round off a superb week of judo for the East Midlands Team. Earlier in the Week Barry had also won a gold medal in his event and Kellie won a silver medal in her event.
AJA East Midlands Under Orange Belt Competition - Earl Shilton - Sunday 10th May 2009
Although this was a local competition for our members to attend, it was a long day for some who were still fighting at 5pm. At this competition we had the following eight boys representing the club:
Daniel Remington, Harry Smith, Geriant Jones, George Robinson, Joe Matthews, Jacob Philps, Ryan Fitzpaterick and Jed Orpin many of whom were competing in their first competition. All eight boys put in very good performances and the results are as follows:
Geriant Jones put in a much improved performance to win a well deserved bronze medal. George Robinson was outstanding in winning Gold in his event. Jacob Philps in his first competition put in a brilliant performance to win a Silver medal. Ryan Fitzpatrick put in a great performance to win a much deserved bronze medal and Jed Orpin fought well to also win a bronze medal in his first competition.
BJC Junior National Championships- Hereford - Sunday 3rd May 2009
What a great day for Countesthorpe Judo Club. We sent eight fighters to the National championships and returned with four medals. The highlight for me, Paula and Kathy as coaches and for me and paula as parents was to see Chloe Oram win Gold and become the BJC National Champion. I have waited for this day for a long time, because Chloe is so gentle and kind, but also very talented and I told her that one day she would become a National Champion. Well done Clo. . Carl Goodwin was great winning bronze in the mens U60K Espior event, especially because he has only just come back to Judo after a three year break. Sarah Moore also fought well to win a bronze medal in the U60K event. There were also good performances from Conor Robinson, George Robinson, Oliver Smith and Geriant Jones.
AJA East Midlands Junior & Senior Championships- Earl Shilton - Sunday 26th April 2009
This was a tough day for our members who looked like they needed the competition. Chloe Oram won Silver in the U45K event . more information to follow:-
BJA Under 20's Competition - Walsall 30th January 2009
Only 3 members of the club entered this competition. Connor Robinson fought very well but unfortunately lost both of his fights. This was a big step up for connor who did not look out of place against some very talented boys. Sarah Moore also put in a good performance after initially allowing nerves to get the better of her. Once again Sarah showed promise that she is a very good judoka. Chloe Oram was very impressive after initially losing her first two fights she came back strongly to win the next three fights eventually losing out for a place in the final. After six fights she won a well deserved Bronze medal.
Club Competition & Awards & Farewell party-30th November 2008
This was another good day with some very good judo on display. In the evening we gave out the medals to those who had impressed throughout the year.
AJA Junior & Senior Open Championships - Earl Shilton - Sunday 26th September 2008
This was a bitter sweet day for Countesthorpe with eight of the ten competitiors from our club returning with medals, but also with two members returning injured and having to spend an afternoon at the George Elliott Hospital in Nuneaton, both of whom returned home on crutches.
The suprise of the day was Ben Fenwick who was very impressive winning three fights by ippon and winning the Gold medal in his event and it was another very good performance by George Robinson winning four fights and a silver medal. Harry Smith in his first competition also fought well and returned with a Bronze medal, Whilst in the Senior Event Mike Fenwick did exceptionally well to win a Silver medal in the Kyu grade event. It was nice to see Dan Remington and James Bale competing in this championship but unfortunately this time they did not get any medals.
Here come the girls- The club has always done exceptionally well with girl members, but today for some it turned out to be a bit tougher than anticipated. Chloe Oram did well in her event winning the Gold medal in the U45K event, Sarah moore also won her first fight and then suffered the same injury in the final and also withdrew , but still won a silver medal.
Bushi Invitation Championships - Castle Vale, Birmingham - Sunday 14th September 2008
We decided to send nine of players to the 11th Annual AJA Bushi Championships at the Castle Vsale Leisure Centre in Birmingham. The competition was a very well run event with some very good Judo on display throughout the day. All nine of our players did exceptionally well puting in some very good performances, considering this was our first competition since mid July following the summer break. Daniel Remington (aged 6) seemed to enjoy himself winning a bronze medal in the U20K event , Whilst Rebecca Gamble aged 9 in her first competition this year came up against some tough, experienced and older opponents in the U36K. Rebecca did not win a medal but put in a fine performance.
Another performance that was exceptionally good was by George Robinson who failed to make the U28 Kilo weight category by 0.1 of a kilo and had to fight in the under 32 Kilo event. George had five fights and won three fights by ippon before narrowly missing out for the Bronze medal.
Chloe Oram (under 45K) continued her improvement by winning her first fight by ippon, before losing her second fight by the same score, however she got back on track winning her third opponent in a close fought contest and then faced the winner of the 2nd pool to get into the final. Chloe beat this girl by 2 Waza-ari scores and ended up fighting against the girl who she lost too in the 2nd round this time in the final. Chloe's opponent was very good and chloe had to settle for a silver medal, but should remember that performances are more important than dust collectors (sorry medals). Geriant Jones put in a superb performance winning his first fight by an ippon throw and eventually ended up with a bronze medal. Whilst Connor Robinson also won his first fight and ended up winning a silver medal inthe boys under 45K event. , Sarah Moore who went on to win Silver in the U55K event. Well done to all nine of you.

Leicestershire & Northants Open Invitation Championships- Sunday 21st October
Usually we have a lot of our members competing at this local event, but this year only nine club members took part. We did not have the best of starts with Sam Robinson withdrawing after his first contest suffering from an ear infection (Get well soon Sam). Then Ben Dann withdrawing after his first contest after picking up an injury ( get well soon Ben). Then Scott Bryan put in a superb display and after being awarded a Silver medal he very sportingly exchanged it for a bronze after a slight mix by the table officials. (Well done Scott). Connor Robinson started well with an excellent ippon throw and eventually just missed out in winning a medal (Well done Connor). Sarah Moore also impressed but again just missed out in winning a medal (remember Sazza its performances that count and this one was very good) Chloe Oram was up next and with 2 wins on the ground she went on to throw her third opponent for ippon to get into the final. Chloe put up an excellent display but lost in the final to an extremely good judo player (Jade Hamilton from Washington) Chloe won the silver but this was by far your best performance of the year.
Kathryn Oram fought in the senior ladies event and put in a good performance to win a bronze medal (and a black eye)
East Anglia Open (MAC) Norwich - Sunday 14th October
What a good weekend we had in Norwich, the Majority of us travelled to Norwich on the Saturday and spent the day in an exclusive sports club, swimming in both the indoor and outdoor pools (Yes out doors in October). Also in the out door Hot tub and then later settled down for an evening meal and the odd drink or two watching England win at Rugby.
Sorry, almost forgot about the Judo, the next day we travelled the seven miles to the venue, got lost and after an hour eventually found Easton College. then spent the next 45 minutes trying to direct Mike Fenwick who travelled down on the day (Talk about stress).
Eventually we got down to some Judo and our players put in good performances with all six of them returning with medals.

Heart Of England - International Judo Competition : Sunday 2nd September Nia Birmingham
This was our first competition after the summer break and we had an early start to make the 8.30am weigh-in at the NIA in Birmingham. When we got there we discovered that the weigh-in times for Chloe, Sarah were actually 10.30am and 11.30am (not a good start).
At 2pm we knew we were in for a long day as none of our girls had been called to fight and we were still waiting for Emily's event to start at 6.30pm and we didn't get home until 9pm. Sarah & Chloe fought well but returned with no medals this time.
2007 British Closed SN Championships - 14th July Cardiff - On Friday 13th (not a good day to travel) we set off straight from work in the minibus in horrendous weather and traffic to take Sean to Cardiff, where the following day he was competing in the British Closed Special Needs Championships in Cardiff. This was a fantastic event with some great Judo throughout the day. Sean did exceptionally well winning a bronze medal in his event. (Well done Sean). The Journey back was great as the weather was fantastic with blazing sunshine. (That's why we had to stop at the pub)
Special thanks to all of the club members and supporters who travelled down to Cardiff to support Sean.
Especially the following Martin (not in the photo, unless you count his thumb) Kathy. Paula, Dawn, Emily, Chloe, Kathryn, Mark and not forgetting John (Sean's Dad).
